Is it possible to make a sharp, crisp looking MPEG4? I’ve tried a lot of combinations and am currently looking a pile of my hair on the floor here, in vain.

Original shot at 1024×768 and would love the finished product to be the same size with everything sharp at, of course, smallest possible file size.

Is this possible? Can someone, anyone steer me along a course of correction here, please so I will not have to give some lame excuse to my kids as to why dad has gone from slightly balding to egghead, in one day?

[Lawrence Eaton] “I’ve tried a lot of combinations”

    Lawrence,

We’re good, but we’re not mind readers. Exactly what combinations have you tried, using which particular Quicktime apps?

Oh, and exactly how did you come by the 1024×768 pixels dimensions? That’s an odd size.

Also, what exactly is your objective? I ask, because rarely does anyone create MPEG4s that are the same size as the original.

    David,

Many thanks for helping to get my mind into gear today. Apologies as well.

    Technical side of the equation:
Data comes to me as 24bit (True colour)
    photo-jpeg at 1024×768 res
    30fps
    uncompressed audio
    32000Hz 8bit mono.

    I’m using FCP 6.04 with Compressor 3.03.
    FCP for editing and then (Option 1)I’ve exported to Quicktime conversion to MPEG4;
(Option 2)To compressor to create MPEG4
(Option 3)File>export>Quicktime; then import to compressor and output as standard apple setting for MPEG4

This morning, I ‘cooked’ a sample and though large-ish, the quality was much better – but, to be perfectly honest, I was getting two kids off to school and forgot which settings were which before one of them quit Compressor.

Size of movie: 800×600 would be acceptable or should I say, satisfactory but 1024×768 would be so much better.

Other than that, I am in your hands, David.

    Many thanks,

I just now created a MPEG4 using the Compressor preset and it was dandy. The original was 620Mb and the MPEG4 was just 12.5Mb.

In my case, I used a ProRes file which started as 1920 x 1080 as I didn’t have any video that was 1024×768. I exported a self contained file from FCP using current settings, and used that file in Compressor with the one and only MPEG4 preset, and the only thing I adjusted was the frame size, which I set to 1024×768 in the “geometry” window. My anamorpic video came out stretched, but it was very, very sharp and clear.

    David,

I’ve just tried what you mentioned and, literally, it’s awesome (like a hotdog – if you know the inference). WOW!

One happy bunny here – let the ‘games’ begin!
