  • Problems working with video and image files

Posted by Danny Mears on November 18, 2010 at 6:10 pm

So I’m working with image files (a lot of them) and video files. Any time I make an edit, I have to re-render.

The video files are ProRes LT at 24fps. I notice that when I look at the item properties for the image files, they show a 29.97 frame rate. That sounds impossible, as they are just still images, but I imagine this has something to do with the render times.

Is there a fix for this or am I stuck with rendering every time I make an edit?

[Danny Mears] “. I notice that when I look at the item properties for the image files, they show a 29.97 frame rate. “
Stills are just stills so there is not time-base involvement.
I guess that FC set that (29.97) as default.
I don’t think this is a factor for your rendering.
That may be related with the stills format/size, the amount of stills on the time-line, the assigned “Still-cache”,..

    I’m not sure.

I’m working with jpeg files, but I still must render if a sequence has only one video clip and one still.

    Do you have “Unlimited RT”?

Yep. 24 FPS Apple ProRes (LT).

Could the problem be that we’re working with a non-standard size (the files are 1280×800). If so, what do you suggest?

One workaround that seems to be working (but is completely messy and seems just wrong) is to convert the files to 1280×1080, bring them into Final Cut, and then change their pixel aspect ratio to 960×720. Any ideas?

    That is the problem.
The solution is to work with standard sizes.
The RT engine is based on video standards.

I thank you for the glib and condescending answer and I really appreciate your non-offer of any ideas for a solution.

I realize that we are working with a non-standard video file (1280×800). But this is what I am given and it’s what I am being forced to work with. (The extra height of the frame is for a numerical burn in, placed there by the animators to help them in creating the shots.)

If anyone would like to help me work through these issues (outside of going to the animation supervisors and telling them that they’ll have to change the entire workflow for 90+ animators), I’d love to hear it.

    Danny,
I don’t offer any solution, because I don’t have it.
As I said, not only the RT engine, but FC is built around video standard. Off standard, the RT performance will depend of many things: Picture size, codec, system capacity and RT settings.
Your video codec is perfect for RT, but not the size; neither JPEG is a good format for FC.

    – Rise the still cache.

    – Tweak the RT setting: Unlimited/ Dynamic Frame Rate/ Dynamic quality. If its doesn’t work, try “Play base layer only”.

Rafael answered you four different times Danny and he helped you to determine the source of the issue you’re up against. The fact that you’re working in a non-standard manner with non-standard frames means there may be no good solution for you, and you can’t really blame Rafael for that. He’s neither your paid consultant nor your whipping boy, so take it a bit easier on him please.

Thanks, guys. Sorry to have been so angry about it.

I’ll just deal with the rendering times and suck it up.
