  • Problems With/Questions About Video Proxies

Posted by Rich Kutnick on February 7, 2019 at 1:37 pm

Using Magix Vegas Pro V16, Build 361 to create video proxies of 1920X1080X32 59.940p M2TS files recorded on my Sony AX-33 camcorder. No problems creating the proxies in my first VEG file, but in the second one I am receiving the error, “An error occurred while creating a proxy file for a stream. An error occurred while converting with a codec.”

    1) If I highlight all of my M2TS files under the Project Media tab and right click them, the “Create Video Proxy” is grayed out. I assume that this is because some of the files highlighted already have had video proxies created. Yes, I have sorted the file types and through trial and error I have identified those files that have not had video proxies created yet, but is there a better, more definitive way to identify them for selection?

    2) Even if I highlight any eligible single clip for video proxy creation (about 100 clips in this VEG file had video proxies successfully created but around 200 more cannot be created due to the error), the error still occurs.

    Any ideas on the above?

    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Rich,

I’ve never seen this error or read about it before. I would perform a full reset of Vegas Pro. While holding down the ‘Ctrl+Shift’ keys double left click on the Vegas Pro desktop shortcut. Then check the box ‘Delete all cached application’, then left click on ‘Yes’. This will reset Vega Pro to it’s original installation setting and delete the stored up cached application data which sometimes will cause Vegas to act strangely.

If you look in the folder of your source media the proxy files will have the same name but the extension will be ‘*.sfvp0’.

If I have clips in the Project Media bin that have already created proxy files, and I select all, the ‘Create Video Proxy’ option is highlighted and available. If I select it, Vegas will create proxy files on all the clips within that selection that do not previously have proxies and skip those who have.

So, it appears to me that your Vegas Pro is acting strangely and my first step would be to perform the full reset.

    Best Regards……George

After thinking about it for awhile, I realized (and then checked to confirm) that I was running very low on space on the HD that contained my sources files. So I moved all of the source files over to an empty, large external HD and I now was able to create the proxies. With respect to the grayed-out selection, I will have to check this out in the future, as I was able to determine by trial and error which files had yet to be converted to proxies. Of the 654 M2TS files in my final VEG file, 170 proxy files have successfully be written over the past few hours and I’ll just let it be to finish up.

    Thanks for the quick response/ideas!
