  • Problems with relinking hi-res to lo-res in Final Cut 5

I have a project in which all of the media is offline RT. I am now trying to relink the project, (which includes multiclips), with the same clips, only this time the clips are hi-res, DV-NTSC. The clips are named exactly the same in both the lo-res and hi-res media. Despite having the same file name and timecode, some of the relinked clips are out of sync. I am also having problems when media managing. When up-resing the clips, the clips that are up-resed are out of sync with the original video, giving me clips that where not in the project, or giving me the same clip multiple times in different spots of the sequence. Any suggestions?

Timecode doesn’t matter, really. Not only do your media files need to have the same names, the number of frames from the beginning of the media file to the in point needs to be the same.

A simpler way of looking at it would be, the clips must be identical in their start time and durations as well.

How much out of sync? A few frames or totally whacked?

Depending on how you originally digitized the material, it’s not unusual for the “hi res” to be a few frames out of sync. Whenever we do this process we make sure to digitize the up res WITH handles, and then check every shot for sync. More than we wish are usually out by a few frames.
