  • Problems with Octo 2.93 MacPro…just to FinalShare or everywhere?

Posted by Dave Gorrie on December 1, 2009 at 6:24 pm

    Hi All,

We’re considering heavily a SAN that is similar to ones discussed by Walter/Bob Z – but just read some interesting/disheartening news on the hartwell chips. Has anyone figured out if these are a specific issues related to ONLY the 2.93 MacPro, or the Final Share as well?

For the life of me I cannot find specific model information regarding which chipsets are used (not even lowendmac.com!) – while we never buy the top of the line systems, I don’t know if this effects the mid-level octo’s as well.

Love this forum by the way!

All you have to do is purchase a single port ethernet card (the PEG1D) for $99, and put this in your new MAC Pro Octo. This is a $99 fix. You will find (searching thru google) that the entire linux community is reporting that once you exceed 60Mb/sec on the native ethernet port on the new Nehalem MAC Pro, the ethernet port disconnects. This is what we found as well, and so we stick in a cheap card, and the problem is resolved.

Non Nehalem computers do not have this issue, and since the “server” does not use the native ethernet ports, MAC Pro “servers” do not need one of these cards – only FCP clients.

From Bob’s do-it-yourself tutorial (and q&a below it) the idea of hooking up one of the new quad-core i7 iMacs to the SAN via ethernet is very attractive. Does this issue affect the new iMacs as well or just the new MacPros?

We are checking with Apple but as far as we know the imac uses a different chip set and seems to be fine. We have had no complaints so far with clients using the imac. Back to you soon if we find out any different. We are here if you have any further questions. rom@maxxdigital.com
