  • Problems with keying/alpha?

Posted by Martin Banks on April 8, 2008 at 5:15 pm

    Hi,
I used the Keylight plugin in AE6.5 to sort a green screen key, as it as quite badly shot and need a lot of fiddling to get rid of the green screen and reflection of green on the subject.

However, now that it is keyed I want to import this clip back in to FCP. Making the clip into a QT with the animation codec using RGB+Alpha export settings I have then imported the clip into FCP 5.

However once the clip is placed on the timeline there is black background to it. I thought that exporting the clip from AE with the alpha would then allow FCP to remove the black.

If I have misunderstood how this should work correctly then I would be very grateful for any help, or even if you think I haven’t set an option up in FCP to allow the alpha channel then I would be very grateful to know where this option is!

ANY help would be grand! I hope someone can!
    Thanks in advance,
    Martin.

I am unsure what you mean. I keyed out the background in AE for the entire shot, then I am bringing the clip back into FCP to place into a sequence containing other layers. The problem is that the keyed out background then becomes black when I import the clip into FCP.

Right click on the clip and bring up the format settings for the clip. The alpha should be set to “straight.” This should get you where you want to be.

I opened up the clip settings, and it appears that the alpha setting is already set at Straight, so I’m still confused.

I will now build the whole thing in AE, I was just asking here to find out if there was something simple that I was doing wrong, so that with future project I would do it right, however I am really now confused.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.
    Martin.

Haha, I like the comment about polishing a turd, that’s what it feels like! It is DV.

However the key I have done looks good in AE, there are hardly any black edging around the subject (actress). I have done more than a “couple of clicks”. And personally if the whole I was building the whole scene myself I would create it in AE. However I just asked to correct the keying from the sequence. But now, because I can’t figure out why the subject just imports into FCP as just her in a black screen, I have rebuilt the sequence entirely in AE & it appears to have worked.

I was just hoping to figure out why I had the full black screen in case I encountered the same problem in the future with something that I haven’t been able to rebuild.

The export of the sequence from AE wil be done in a bit and I can tell you if it worked. However I would still like to know what may have been causing the earlier problem if anyone knows.

    Thanks again.

Most likely, there was something not set right in the render out of AE. To render out with an alpha, you need to render to the animation codec, and you need to set your color in AE to “millions +”. Also, you need to have no background visible in your AE comp.

AE defaults to premultiplied, so set your alpha to ‘Black’ and your turd will be glowing from your polishing efforts.
