  • Problems with interlacing whilst rendering to DVD

HI guys. Much appreciate the opportunities and help that this forum provides. I am editing a project that is in HD 1080i (1920×1080 at 25fps – upper field first which matches some HD video clips included). The project containes a lot of still images but I am having trouble with the HD video clips.
I have rendered the project as a hdd file in HD (two pass)and it looks great. I am also trying to burn a copy to a dvd and this is where I am coming unstuck. I am using and customising the HDV720p and 720i templates in Mainconcept as well as those for DVDA and others but haven’t found anything that works! The HD video clips are badly interlacing no matter what template and field order (or not) that I attempt to use. Have searched this forum as I know this is a regular issue for people but . . .?

Any suggestions please. It is for my daughters 21st in 2 days and I am frazzled after a big day celebrating Australia Day! Off to bed now with a headache, ha ha.

    Cheers, Phil

In your project properties, select the deinterlacing method to blend. Tick match project settings to media as well.

I suspect that you are using the standard HD 1080/50i template which defaults to none.

I assume that your media is 1920×1080 to begin with.

Don’t forget to select reduce interlace flicker for your images on the timeline,

Hopefully your Australia Day celebrations were a bit drier than mine in Queensland.

Thanks for your response Nigel. Did or confirmed that your suggestions were done in the project settings then tried every possible combination of rendering settings in the Mainconcept that I can think of. Without any luck.

I must admit I am a bit perplexed to say the least. The original video footage was imported as is and is showing as 1920×1080 25fps upper field first (although I thought that hd handycams are all progressive are they not?)

On the time line, the clip plays beautifully with defined movement.

When I try and render using Mainconcept, whether as progressive or upper field first, whether at 25p or 50i, I get a ghost image. I have eliminated the interlacing problem I had but now just have this annoying ghosting going on. I have also tried just burning directly to DVD which results in the aforementioned interlacing?!

And incidently I have edited my location setting. Didn’t know it was there. Your reply prompted me to check. Bingo, I am actually in Brisbane too! Southside. And our day was not quite so wet as the days surrounding it!!

Thanks again Nigel. And to anyone else who may have some advice/ideas.

    Cheers, Phil

You might want to try adaptive deinterlacing instead of field blending deinterlacing. Autodesk cleaner has this and other options..there may be a demo download. Also if you output an uncompressed or lagarith etc. 1080i .avi file you have many deinterlacing options in virtual dub which is a free program.

Thanks Ken. I am still absolutely stumped though.

I have opened a new project, placed one clip onto a track and set the project properties to match the clip. I have then rendered, using Mainconcept MPG2 and have ticked the ‘Match Project Settings’ option. The short clip then renders (two pass) but produces an image as shown in my attached jpg (one of the original frame and one of the same or similar frame once rendered and played in VLC. The ghosting is very obvious.

WTH is going on? Anyone, please?

Give the following suggestion a try (courtesy of John Cline).

If you are rescaling interlaced footage you MUST set a deinterlace method in the project properties. (Personally, I always use “interpolate.”)
Set your render mode to Best too.
Render a minute or so as a test and see if that helps.
    Good luck with it.

Skip the match project settings and set everything manually… Are you trying to go to Bluray on a standard dvd or standard def on an a standard dvd? would it be possible to post a short clip of the original
for download for a test (Dropbox etc)

Thanks Mike and Ken. Got to love these forums (I’m always reading but not up to advising just yet, only been using Vegas for about three years, ha ha).

Guys, I have run out of rendering combinations. I think I have tried every available combination that I can think of. I made the DVD which was watchable; I was on a time schedule as most of us are so had to come up with something. But now I am trying to render a HD file so that I can watch it at home as it is my daughter’s video. And that’s where the issue currently lies. I have been mostly using the 1920/1080-50i Blue Ray template in Mainconcept MPG2 as it most closely matches the input (1920/1080i at 25fps, upper field first according to Vegas’s reading).

And Ken, I would love your help but can’t think of a way to post a short original clip as the originals consist of several takes in one continuous clip (a rather embarrassing one too!) so, unless you can suggest how I can post a short section of the original (without rendering it obviously) I am stuck.

But look. I am very grateful for your input guys and for the fact that several of you obviously monitor this forum continuously in order to assist people like me. Cheers!
