  • Problems with interlacing when exporting .mov file!

I have recently finished a film that I worked on with a friend. It is 80 minutes in length, and was edited within AVID Xpress Pro. It was filmed with 2 cameras:

    Canon gl2 and Canon XL2.

They recorded at 24p 16:9 NTSC format.

I plan on exporting this movie and putting it onto DVD with a different program.

I have already edited everything, done color correction, etc. and it all looks fine. However, when I export my project as a .Mov file, something happens with the interlacing with the movie.

I am not experienced with interlacing, but I know that something is wrong. During parts with a lot of movement, the horizontal lines appear and mess up the image. However, it is only wrong with the footage recorded by the XL2. The footage from the GL2 is fine.

Let me know if more information is required and what I should do.

Also: When I open up the export settings, I cannot adjust the interlacing settings or even see them. I think this is because I set the projects settings to 24p. Can I change that somehow?

Sounds like the capture was done wrong. If you are in a 23.976, the capture expects true 2:3 pulldown either as NORMAL or ADVANCED pulldown. I do not believe the GL2 is a 24 frame camera. Capturing 59.94 interlace in a 23.976 that is not 23.976 native will cause bad frame interpolation when displayed at 59.94.

Well, the strange thing is the GL2 stuff is fine though. Are you saying there was a problem with that or the XL2, because the XL2 is the captured footage that is behaving oddly.

If it is just the XL2, then perhaps the setting was wrong for 23.976 capture. Try recapturing one of the source clips with proper settings in the Film/24p settings such as pulldown cadence, “A” frame etc.
