  • Problems with aspect ratio

Posted by Christine Lensberg on September 22, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Heya, I’m having some trouble with my FCP project and was hoping someone here can help me.

The footage is shot in DVCam on a Sony HVR-Z5.
I’ve captured it into FCP using the following settings:

    DV-PAL 48 kHz
    Frame size: 720×576
    anamorphic
    25 fps
    pixel aspect: PAL-CCIR 601
    lower (even) field dominance

The sequence preset is set to the same, except it’s not anamorphic.

    So, my problem is:
The footage looks letterboxed in the fcp viewer, but the aspect ratio looks correct. However, when I try to export it and play it full screen in QT, something’s wrong. The aspect ratio still looks correct, but the video is very small, bad quality, with a thick black “frame” around it.

I tried exporting it both as a normal QT movie from fcp, and also through compressor, as iPod video, but the same happens here. When I tried with compressor’s DVD best quality 90 mins, the thick black box was gone, but the video had a thin layer of black on the top and bottom (not as much as with letterboxed ones…)

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me with this.
    Thanks so much!

    Christine.

First thing to do is change your sequence setting to be anamorphic…

Look at your clips in the browser. Is there a check mark in the Anamorphic column? If not, then add the checkmark.

It would be better if you could start with a new anamorphic sequence.

If you can’t, then you will need to go to the distort/aspect settings in the motion tab of the viewer for one of the clips.

First, set the scale to 100.

Then set the aspect setting to EITHER 0, or 33, or -33 (or it might be -66 or 66, I haven’t used SD footage in a while!) One of these should look correct. Sorry – I can’t test this to see which way round works for this footage, but the correction will be obvious when it’s right – there will be no black around the footage in the Canvas, only the grey around the viewing window.

When you’ve got one right, copy it, then select all the other clips in the timeline with the track tool (the arrow pointing right) and right click on the selection, and select ‘paste attributes’ then select to paste in ‘basic motion’. I think that’s all you need to check, but again, I don’t have a system open in front of me.

If you have set any sizes previously in the timeline, such as picture-in-picture boxes, all this work will be lost. If you just want everything fullframe, this is the method for you…

    Good luck!

ben – its not the Basic Motion but the Distort attributes you need to paste in.

That way any scale or position changes wont be affected, only the aspect ratio.
