Problems with animation codec
I already posted this question in the compression techniques forum, but havent gotten a response yet, so im reposting in this forum as it is related so….
Hello, I am doing a batch export from FCP of about 76 sequences using the QT custom option (animation codec, best quality, million+ colors, 720*480). The problem Im having is that any sequence over 2.5 minutes in length, I get an error message saying the file is to big. There is 1 sequence, (the first one), that was 3 minutes and still worked, but this is the only exception to the whole export. All the rest fall into the 2.5 min conundrum: under 2.5 min. succesful; over 2.5 min, error, file too big. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, this animation codec is new to me, but I need to figure out this problem immediately.

Why do you need Animation? Are you exporting Alpha?

Im using animation because I have to compress further with divx, and want to maintain the highest quality. Also, its in the specs I have for this project.

Animation codec is RGB so I don’t think is the best if you go to end up in divex that, if I;m not wrong, is MP4, so YCrCb based.
Animation make very big files. You can get the same quality with much smallers files. With PhotoJPEG 100%, 8b Unc for example.
Also if you are not exporting Alpha chanell, export in Millions of Colors. Never Millions+ . This doen’t give more quality but add an alpha Channel. 32 bits instead of 24. Bigger files for nothing.

I’d just export it from whatever you edited as. You’re going to crunch it anyway.

Thank you both for the information about the codec, the million+ thing is really good to know. I would rather export to divx straight from final cut, but when I try to batch export using divx, I cant change the divx settings, default only. Is there a way around this?d So that would mean Id have to do 76 sequences manually, and I was hoping to set this up at the end of the day and leave, so Im not tying up fcp all day. Any ideas as to the 2.5 min problem I was having? Ill try changing million+ to milion and see what happens.
