(OK; my problems are stupidity-caused, I suspect — but they’re still problems!!)

I’m having serious problems mixing the audio in a project. Since I’ve been a producer-writer-editor for a long while,
I’ve never had to deal with many of the nitty-gritty details of mixing. Now that I’m working with Premiere Pro, mostly
alone, I’m finding many of the details (mostly the “mechanical” details – how to find and set the software switches) are outside my range of experience.
I’ve had good luck with setting levels using keyframes in the Timeline; levels are satisfactory, at least to this point.
I’ve had fair luck with balance adjustments (I’m using an on-camera stereo mic and have occasionally needed to adjust
    between competing channels).
My primary problems have been with audio effects. I can find and select the needed effects (EQ, mostly) in the Audio Mixer window; I can Edit the settings in the “Audio 2” Effect 1 window; I can set up an automation pass using the Write setting and hear the changes. A quick replay of the track shows the changes. However, a replay of an extended portion of the track has no changes!
I’ve read (and re-re-re-re-read) the Help files on audio mixing, adding effects, and everything else that seems pertinent — and I can’t solve it. I seem to be missing a switch — and I can’t find it! I can hear the changes, but I can’t seem to record them.
    Any suggestions?

Is there a book or online Help or Tutorial file that would cover the Audio Mixer in step-by-step detail? (I haven’t
tried the Timeline/Keyframe route for effects; that seems even more complicated.)

Sorry to clutter the forum with such elemental problems, but they aren’t elemental to me at the moment.

How are you attempting to change the properties of the effects? via the Audio Mixer or via the ECW (Effects Control Window. If you are using the mixer, then try using the ECW to see if it helps and vice-versa. Also, if you could post a screenshot or email it to me, it would give us a better idea of what you are trying to accomplish.
