Problems Troubleshooting FCP
Trying to figure out why my FCP project keeps crashing on playback or while editing …
I am editing a super-16 feature that was xfered to DVCAM (29.97) and loaded into FCP 4.5, I did a reverse telecine and am now working with 23.98 clips in a new project. My co-director and I have two editing workstations one is a g5 dual 2.5 and the other a g5 with a dual 1.8. They both have a gig of ram. They have been loaded with the same software (FCP 4.5), OS 10.39 and identical settings. The only major difference is the processor speed and that the dual 1.8 has an additional video card so it can play out to three monitors (the dual 2.5 is editing with two). The dual 1.8 is crashing within five minutes, while the dual 2.5 doesn’t crash at all (or at least rarely). I’ve done all the obvious stuff, trashing prefs, unplugging the additional monitor, I’ve crosschecked the media (we use external lacie firewire drives), the projects, the monitors, I’ve even reinstalled the OS and FCP from scratch identically to the way it was done on the dual 2.5…. still crashing quickly (within ten minutes of editing). We are using Unlimited RT and adding a letterbox which it’s rendering in real time.
Any theories as to whether it would be a video card issue, processor speed, bad machine?
Any other ideas on things I could check …

RAM… check your RAM on that machine… Run it with only a pair of sticks at a time until stability shows up… if this doesn’t help, I’d have an Apple Repair center take a peek…
