  • Problems transferring project to new machine – render files

I like to know the proper workflow to transfer a project between different workstations. I started editing my project on my laptop. All the project files are on an external drive. I simply wanted to connect that external drive to my imac and continue editing.

When I connected the HD to the imac Premiere couldn’t find the rendered files because I had originally set the render files location to the local HD on my laptop. I understood why this happened but why cant I just re-render those files now that its on a new machine?

I reconnected my project to the original laptop… then changed the render files location to the external HD. I rerendered the entire timeline, then reconnected back to the imac. Great the images all showed up. I thought the problem was solved, but as soon as I applied a new effect settings to that footage premiere could not locate the original files.

This is a really common practice to edit a project on different workstations, how are people dealing with this?

You might want to take a look at PPro’s Project Manager, which was created to allow for transportable projects. Here’s a tutorial on which will help you decide whether it will work for you:

There are lots of options in the Project Manager, including the ability to move preview files, which seems to be your problem.

I always set everything to follow the projects folder.

In my case, everything is on a RAID5 array.

All clips, graphics, audio and render previews go in that single project folder.

I’ve had no problems moving them from one system to another.
