We run 2 edit suites using G5s and FCP.

The newer system has just been upgraded to OSX 10.4.7 with associated latest QuickTime version – thanks to software upgrade prompting by Apple. Its uses a Blackmagic Multibridge HD and card and a fast external scsi RAID.

We have encountered a weird seemingly random problem running FCP 5.04. Basically FCP loads a project fine, you can scan time lines but as soon as you try to play the media the application freezes. The only way out is to force quit.

A work around we discovered, more by chance than design, was to create a new user log in and this worked initially but now also doesn

    Rob,

In the future clone your system drives to external hard drives ($80 nowadays) and keep those in a safe place. Every time an update comes along you can feel safe to jump right in knowing your clone of your perfect system drive is standing by. After testing the update for a period of time re-clone the system drive when you’re certain its all good and tuck it away again for safe keeping until the next upgrade.

As far as your now funky system is concerned, go and get that external drive that I mentioned, install the latest version of Tiger and all updates. Then install FCP and all updates. Now test, test, test using the external system drive. Once you know its good to go, either swap it with the internal drive or clone it to the internal drive. Of course do make cerain to backup all of your projects and any other data you want to keep.

[RHP Video Prods] “thanks to software upgrade prompting by Apple.”

UN CHECK that prompt in your system preferences so you are not tempted to do every update that comes along. When you need to do an update make sure you read all the read me files about what the update will do, and decide whether you really need it or not. As for your current problem here’s a couple of things to try that may help.

Thanks for your responses. I am not convinced it is a OSX 10.4.7 upgrade problem but will take the approriate safety measures for the future so I can “roll back”.

Today when we came in and switched on the system FCP loaded up fine and plays back media no probs. Yesterday we couldn’t get it to.

So I am thinking perhaps Blackmagic boad problem? Any suggestions on the back of thsi extra info much appreciated.

    thanks

    ROB
