  • Problems Round Tripping to Color

    Hello everyone,

I’m having difficulty round-tripping a sequence to Color and back. If anyone could please help I would appreciate it. Here’s my workflow for this project.

  • Started with two camera angles: camera 1 is XDCam 1080p30, camera 2 is HDV 1440 x 1080.
  • Converted both clips using Compressor: Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920 x 1080 square.
  • Marked in points on both clips to a clapboard.
  • Created a multiclip from the two clips.
  • Created a new sequence: Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920 x 1080 square.
  • Inserted the multiclip. Set the camera angles and audio as desired. The result is 4 clips, 2 from each camera (back and forth twice).
  • Collapsed the multiclip.
  • Sent the sequence to Color by clicking the sequence, then clicking ‘File’ -> ‘Send To’ -> ‘Color’
  • Now in Color, I have the 4 clips I expect to see. I make my color and lighting adjustments as necessary. I save my document.
  • I Render All clips.
  • I click ‘File’ -> ‘Send To’ -> ‘Final Cut Pro’
  • I am taken back to Final Cut pro.
  • Now, at this point I expect to see a new sequence with my color-corrected footage. Instead, I see a new folder called “Multiclips” containing 6 clips that are offline.

Here are some things that I’ve tried.

  • Yes I’m positive I collapsed the multiclip. I have uncollapsed, and recollapsed it a dozen times.
  • Yes I’m positive I rendered all of my clips in Color. I’ve done it several times and its taking forever.
  • I tried exporting XML out of Color, then importing the XML file into Final Cut. I get an error message about an invalid XML tag. Then, I get the same result as above.
  • I tried trashing my FCP prefs.
  • I tried copying the sequence to a new project. Same effect.
  • Would appreciate any insight that anyone can provide. Thanks in advance.

Well, now I’m reading that even though I have collapsed the clips, you can’t really do this in Color 1.0X. Is my best bet to export to Quicktime, import the Quicktime file and send that to Color?

Yeah…be sure to chop it up. Easy enough, just put the full file on the layer above everything and then you can find the cut points.

      Yes, Color 1.5 fixed this….

Wonder if you could match frame/replace all the multi clips before sending to color and get around this that way. Might be faster to match frame, replace edit every clip..?

      Jerry,

That sounds interesting, however I’m still relatively new to FCP and I’m not really even sure what you are talking about. 🙂

Is that matching frames back to the original clip that isn’t part of the multiclip? i.e. replacing the multiclip with the original source clips?

Yeah. It’s replacing the edits from the multi clips quickly back to the original master clips. Unless you’ve added filters to these clips and it makes it tougher… or motion effects etc.

That way the bug in Color 1.0 with multi clips is plain not gonna happen, as they aren’t in the sequence you’re sending to color.

You can do this routine completely with keyboard commands too… Match frame, replace edit, next clip, match frame, replace edit, next clip…

Excellent, thanks Jerry. I was able to get a proof down the pipe with the previous method, but I’ll use your method when the next set of revisions makes its way onto my desk.

Thanks guys for sharing your knowledge.
