  • Problems printing to video

Posted by Julie B on October 20, 2006 at 11:07 pm

Hi everyone! It seems like the only time I post is when I can’t take a project off to tape. But here I am, again, with different problem while trying to take something off to tape.

I have a program that is approximately 29 minutes. About 19 minutes into printing to video, it drops the audio for about 1/2 a second. The video just keeps going no problem, but there’s no audio for a moment. This happens consistantly at the same spot in the program. My audio consists of 2 tracks, ch. 1 is VO, ch. 2 is M&E, both are centered.

Here’s what I’ve done to try to fix the problem:
    1. mixed down the audio
    2. trashed the render files, and then re-rendered/mixed down the audio
    3. dumped the preferences
    4. copied the entire project into a new timeline
    5. exported the entire timeline into an FCP quicktime, then imported that back into FCP
    6. taken that piece of audio and shifted it over about 9 frames (just VO so it’s not synched to anything on the screen)

My sequence is set to 2 channels, stereo, at 48kHz, 16-bit.

My system OSX 10.4.7, Duel 1/8 GHZ Power PC G5, 2.5 GB RAM, FCP 5.0.4. (different computer than what’s in my sig.)

I have customers waiting for the product, but I can’t get it off to tape…I’ve been trying for a week now!! Please help if you can.

    Thanks!!
    Julie

I’ve been recording the project using a Sony DSR-25 deck. I’ve been watching it on a Sony DSR-20 deck, and have had the problem. The tape plays back just fine on the DSR-25. I don’t usually have a problem watching a tape on a DSR-20 if it was recorded on the DSR-25. The deck (the 25) was just serviced last week. For those of you thinking “Then just play it back on the ’25” I can’t. The deck used for VHS duplication is a DSR-20.

I’m taking the project off to tape, again, with a DSR-11 (the other deck hooked up to that computer) in the hopes that it will record fine and all the other decks will play the tape fine. Still, does anyone know why a tape recorded on a DSR-25 will only play back correctly on a DSR-25? Especially when this wasn’t always the case. How convienent (note the sarcasm!)

    Thanks!
    Julie

its posible that it is a bad tape have you tried recording to a different tape

So it stops recording at the same spot every time? What is the error? IS there an error? At that spot on the timeline, what is on the timeline? Where is that footage stored? There might be a clip or something there that is stored NOT on the media drive, but on the system drive or something, thus is choking the system.

    Just a thought.

Two things I’d look at would be the timecode on your timeline and and possibly breaking up the sequence into 2 chunks.

First, your sequence timecode MUST match your tape TC on INSERT layoffs over 5 minutes as a rule of thumb. ASSEMBLE edit to tape does not matter here. I’m assuming that your show starts at an hour (1:00:00;00+ B&T prior), so your tape TC for an INSERT layoff must match. If your sequence crosses a dropped frame that your tape does not see you will get a “Dropped frames on playback” error. So, either do an assemble edit to tape or match your sequence/tape TC.

If this doesn’t work, stripe the tape, INSERT to TAPE the show up to your problematic sequence section. Then insert the remaining sequence. Often I will get errors on export and I’ve found if you can get the show out in chunks it’s better than not at all.

    GL,
    Todd

Yes, I’ve tried 3 different tapes.

So it stops recording at the same spot every time? What is the error? IS there an error?

No, it doesn’t stop recording. It keeps going, but on playback, the audio is missing for about half to a full second.

At that spot on the timeline, what is on the timeline?

On the timeline there was one long continueous clip that has now been razor-bladed into 3 clips (the middle clip is the chunk with the problem). This was my attemp to make FCP render that audio bit into a separate file.

Where is that footage stored? There might be a clip or something there that is stored NOT on the media drive, but on the system drive or something, thus is choking the system.

The footage is stored on an external FW drive, the FCP project is saved on the internal HD. The captured footage is only one clip captured from one tape of the program. It is a 28 min. program that had a correction to be made. I captured the whole video in and made the fix, now I’m trying to take it off to tape again.

I’ve always heard that you’re supposed to keep your media on a different drive than your FCP project. Maybe I should have everything on the internal drive?

So I tried taking the project off to tape with the DSR-11. It will play back fine on the DSR-11 and the DSR-25…but not on the DSR-20’s.

    ????????????????

Ummmm…I’m kinda lost on this. I get it, but I don’t really. 🙂

I’m going to try re-capturing the footage in the hopes that it’s maybe a problem with the original capture. If this doesn’t work, I’ll try your method. I’ll probably post again at that time for more instructions on what to do. 🙂
