I don’t understand this. Can the XL records letter-boxed 16×9?
You shouldn’t be getting any black bar in the canvas, unless you are dropping a 16×9 clip in a 4×3 sequence. neither in the viewer unless the clip is letter-boxed.
So that is may question again: Can the XL2 records directly letter-boxed?
I’ve never worked with the XL2, but I never heard of this function. So please forgive my ignorance if my question is dumb.

I have to admit that this is how all of my projects have been in final cut while working with this camera. That being said, I knew nothing about FCP 3 years ago when I started this project, and have never even considered changing the aspect ratio of my project settings… So you bring up a good point. When I export my project, though, I’ve never had any sort of shrunken video as if it was formatted for 4:3.
And yes, XL-2 records widescreen without stretching. Beautiful image too; the only high quality camera I’ve used that truly looks filmic (especially in tight shots). Better than the Panasonic AG-HMC150 I just shot on, and much much cheaper.

Right now I’m a bit lost because, as long as I can remember, FC3 do not supports Anamorphic. I think I can remember FC started support Anamorphic in v4 or FC 4.5HD.
I really don’t know how this can be affecting your edit. with FC supporting Anamorphic you wouldn’t have this issue of blac bars around. All Anamorphic.
