  • Problems importing Sony PMW-EX1 footage into Premiere CS5.5

Posted by Melina Kolb on December 27, 2011 at 5:53 pm

Someone gave me some footage shot on his Sony PMW-EX1 to edit. He gave me a folder with .mov files in it. When I try importing them into Premiere (full version), it says “codec missing or unavailable”. I don’t know anything about this particular camera and I’m not finding a clear set of directions on how to import this footage into Premiere.

    Thanks for the help!

I would hazard a guess that he did not give you the ORIGINAL folder. Did you try importing in the Import Panel? If you cant ingest, you need that original folder and files associated with it.

You could always try downloading Sony’s XDCAM EX Clip Browser and creating .MXF files with that. But, I believe it only “sees” camera original files. So, if XDCAM EX Clip Browser doesn’t see them, and you can’t import the .MOV files you have, then the files may have been corrupted. Does QT play them?

The best way to bring tapeless media clips into Premiere is through the Media Browser panel, rather than just using “Import”. That said, as Tom mentioned, if you were not given the full folder structure, there may be parts missing, as I believe there should be some .mxf data or similar that Premiere will look for. These new cameras record a lot more than just the basic .mov clips and all the file parts work together – remove one part of the equation and the video clip becomes unusable by itself.

If you got .mov files you got files that have most likely been transcoded from the native files (which are files that end in .MP4). The EX file structure has a lot of other metadata along with it but the media files are .MP4 and encoded with mpeg2 compression. It seems possible that these files are some flavor of Prores.

If you’re on a Mac with FCP installed you should be able to use the .movs, if you are on Windows, it might be more difficult to work with them, but possible if you have the correct quicktime codecs installed.

[Melina Kolb] “He gave me a folder with .mov files in it. When I try importing them into Premiere (full version), it says “codec missing or unavailable”.”

If the files are “.mov”, FCP has rewrapped them. They are now only compatible with FCP (or, a machine with FCP installed as well as Adobe…which would be a Mac of course) unless you install something like calibrated Software’s “XD” product.

Hopefully the source footage from the camera is still available as that would the best option.
