Problems importing MXF files in PPro 5.0
We’re investigating whether PPro can integrate with our tapeless workflow, which uses 1080i XDCAM HD422 files in an MXF wrapper. We’re a movie channel, so the files are typically about 50-60GB in size. The usual workflow is that we import the whole movie and then subclip it.
The problem is that whenever we try and import one of those files into Premiere, the conforming process takes hours – literally. All our MXFs have 8 audio channels, but only 2 of them contain any audio. Premiere insists on conforming all 8 channels, and until it’s finished, the system is so unresponsive that you can’t do anything. Indeed, if you try and do anything at all during the conform, PPro will probably just hang.
We can import the same files into FCP, Smoke or eQ and they’re instantly ready to go. The conforming issue with PPro makes it unuseable for us. Is there any way around it? Would we notice a significant improvement with 5.5 instead of 5.0?

Sounds like a bug… I’ve never had the conform process prevent me from doing anything…

Out of interest, are you typically importing single files on the order of 50-60GB in size?
Just downloaded the trial of 5.5 and it’s doing pretty much the same thing. I’m using a quad-core iMac for this (our 5.0 installation is Windows) and it’s a little bit faster in that you can load the file into the viewer window and scroll through it without the system hanging, but it’s still very slow to update the picture and you can’t hear any accompanying audio until it’s actually been conformed.
Is there no way to bypass the conforming process? What is it actually doing, anyway? Other NLEs don’t seem to need to do it.
