Problems Exporting in ProRes
Hello all,
I use ProRes quite a lot as part of my workflow. But recently (for no reason I can understand) Final Cut Pro has begun to do strange things when I export from the timeline using a ProRes codec. The outputted file is significantly darker than it should be. I’ve tried it with a number of different settings and the result is identical whether it’s ProRes 422 or 4444, or whether the Gamma Correction is set to Automatic or None – the result is the same.
I do not have this problem when I export through Compressor. However, there are many instances where I would prefer to send straight out of FCP. My main concern is this appears to be a glitch with FCP alone that didn’t seem to be a problem before (I’m on version 7.0.2). It seems to have come out of the blue.
Anyone got any suggestions?

What are the sequence settings you’re using before the export?

The sequence settings are XDCAM EX 720p50 35Mbps.

Not sure what would be causing this, though I’ve not read a bunch of folks report it, it could be some sort of bug with XDCAM footage (lots of extra problems seem to revolve around GOP structured media). I don’t export directly from FCP much actually. But you can send directly to compressor from FCP and I do this a lot. If that gets you around the problem as you’ve posted, I’d think you do things this way. It compresses in the background in FCS 2009, and so it’s actually more efficient to use Compressor this way because it allows you to continue to work in FCP. Plus you can speed things up with Qmaster a bit.

I think you may be right. This wouldn’t be the first time that Apple and Sony’s XDCAM have decided not to play nice (Snow Leopard didn’t like the Leopard version of XDCAM Transfer, as I recall).
Exporting through Compressor seems to work fine, so I think that’s what I’ll be doing. The only worry is when you’re having to edit and comrpess on the fly on your MacBook Pro, experience would have me use as few applications at one time as possible, so as to not overheat the poor thing! But I guess that’s the risk you take when you decide to recompress all frames on a MacBook Pro.
