  • Problems editing with H264

Posted by Adrian Scherger on February 22, 2009 at 9:40 pm

I apologize if this was addressed in another forum,

I imported H264 1920 by 1080 footage in FCP Studio 2 and it seemed to work fine.

Are there still problems while editing in H264 with Studio 2? If I export with current settings, will it still be in H264?

I’d like to avoid any problem down the road during this project.

    Thanks!

    Adrian

    Hi Adrian,
FC is not ready yet to edit H264. I think you better transcode to an Intraframe codec.
Here you have some fresh advise:

Brian recommends ProRess. I think that ProRess is OK is you capture through an AJA or BM.
If you just transcode in your computer I would recommend you 8b Unc. Huge file difference from H264 to 8b Unc or ProRess but I’m afraid is the only way.

I would agree, 8bit uncomp would probably give the best result and it is just as easy to transcode to that format if one chooses. I am rarely squeamish about file size but I am doing some longer form work right now and disc space is at a premium.

Converting in the computer with the 8b Unc you extract the 100% of the info in your H264. Then you can edit and render to ProRess.
Going through an AJA or so would be better to go ProRess.
You go from 8b 4.2.0 to 10b 422 with the chroma filtering added by the video card.
Anyway, I think that is just a matter of time that FC can edit native h264.
