    Hi,

I’m trying to down convert 1280X720 24p footage shot by someone else on a P2 card from a HVX200. I down convert in compressor since I do not have a Kona card.

My first question is: Should I convert to 23.98fps or 24fps. What’s the difference? If it should be 23.98fps, why do I not see this option in compressor?

My second question is: I did a down conversion test at 24fps and it went well. The footage looks really nice I think. The problem is the video does not play back on my external monitor. It stays at one frame. I’ve checked all the settings to make sure the video and audio are set to go out via firewire and I’ve refreshed the A/V devices under the “View” menu. I also trashed the prefs. I don’t understand why this suddenly doesn’t work. It’s annoying me.

Lastly, the reason for the down converting is because we have to include footage from a miniDV tape. So obviously the resolution is to low for an HD timeline. Would it be less of a hassle if I force the miniDV footage into the HD timeline anyway and then down convert at the end of the project?

    Thanks for the help

[Rob Grauert] “Should I convert to 23.98fps or 24fps. What’s the difference? If it should be 23.98fps, why do I not see this option in compressor?”

The difference is that 24fps is film…only film and high end HD run at straight 24fps. 23.98 is an HD frame rate. And no, you won’t see it in Compressor. You will have to apply the DV/NTSC Anamorphic setting, and then change the frame rate to 23.98, and save that setting. Test first to see if it works right.

23.98 doesn’t play out via firewire…only 29.97 will. Even DV. The only way to stream a DV signal out via firewire is at 29.97fps. You can see if you can choose that option in the VIEW>VIDEO PLAYBACK option, as I choose DVCPRO HD 720p 59.94 8-bit to view my 720p 23.98 footage. See if that works.

All depends…what is your final output going to be? And do you have a LOT of DV footage? You can up-convert that to match the DVCPRO HD footage using Compressor, or Instant HD.

Make sure that 23.98 frame rate is really 23.976.

    Very important!

Yes, I noticed that Compressor changes it from 23.98 to 23.976 automatically. Thanks for the heads up though, Jeremy.

Really? Not for me. I always have to choose a frame rate of ‘custom’ and type in 23.976.
