  • Problems connecting HVX to Macbook Pro Via Firewire

We had a huge problem tonight and can’t understand what happened.

Tonight we were supposed to stream a live event through Ustream and we were going to use our HVX200 connected via Firewire. Our MacbookPro does not have a Firewire400 port so we went into a Lacie Hardrive with Firewire 400 which was then able to connect to the computer via firewire 800.

We tested everythign last night at home and it worked perfectly. We downloaded Ustream Producer Free, which is able to recognize FireWire cameras and the daisy-chaining was not a problem. We thought we were set. We tested this twice over the past two days. No issues.

Tonight we arrive on location to stream and, guess what, our laptop will not recognize the HVX camera. More specifically, whenver we connected the HVX to the harddrive, the Harddrive would eject itself immediatley upon connection. As a result, Ustream would not recognize the HVX.

We troubleshooted this for nearly 2 hours doing everything you would think of: Restarting the computer with everything disconnected, multiple times and reconnecting things in different order. We also restarted the Firewire bus via advice from elsewhere online. We simply could not figure this out. Other applications would not recognize the camera either. We also tried other firewire cables and had no luck.

We were stumped quite frankly. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might have went wrong and why this happens with our computer all of a sudden?

Try running Disk Utility and verify permissions to the Lacie Drive? Secondly why not just purchase a Firewire 400 to firewire 800 cable? That way you won’t need to run through a HD.

Passing video through firewire and a hard drive in the middle wouldn’t really work- surprised it did once. Next time you want to get a Firewire 800 to 400 adapter.
