  • Problems Capturing HDV

I am trying to capture video from my Canon XH A1 via firewire. Normally this works fine. This time the capture window reports that the device is “offline”, but when I go to the control settings it reports that it is “online”. The play and stop buttons work, but I see no video preview in the monitor and the record button is not available. I have turned everything off and on, connected, disconnected and reconnected, tried another firewire cable. At one point the record button was available despite there being no video on the monitor. I tried to record, but when I stopped the recording no box showed up for me to tile the clip and there was no clip recorded in the bin. And, of course, I promised the project to the customer TOMORROW!

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. (Here’s hoping nobody else has a life and is out on a Saturday night)

    Thanks,
    -Phil

Be sure to check the capture capture settings are set to HDV. DV setting will still control the camera deck but won’t capture HDV.

Thanks for the suggestion. They are set on HDV. I even tried starting another project with the correct settings of 1080 30p to see if maybe I did something wrong the first time, but with the same result.

    Hi Phil,

My understanding is that most (if not all) HDV camcorders that offer 24p or 30p modes actually record that signal in a 1080i wrapper (pulldown is added) so even if you shot in 1080p30 you may need to capture as 1080i60
