  • Problems animating still images “still”

Posted by Todd Schmidt on March 25, 2006 at 2:10 am

    Hey guys,

I posted this the other day and got some good tips. But I’ve not found an answer to solve the problems that come up with animating images. I get imperfections…mainly some serious jiggles as they move. One of the images has a few serious and noticable waves. I’ve tried : reduce interlace flicker, guasioan blur(verticle), frame blending, motion blur…ARRRG! Nothing gets rid of the flicker. Its not all the images that do this. Although, they have a little “noticable to me” imperfections. Please, if there is a one really good answer to this question please let me know. I knoww that I’m not the only one with this happening. A friend of mine has it happen no matter what with FCP.

    Thanks,

    Todd

maybe it could help to have a image to see exactly what kind of imperfection you talk about

Did you actually render out and the artifacts are still there, or are you seeing the flicker in the RAM preview. A lot of times I see flicker in RAM preview but when I render out it is not noticiable.

I have rendered the project out and they are there. It seems that one image in paticular has the worst flickering. I have an animated glow on it and I wonder if it has something to do with that…it shouldnt though. As for an image, you cant see anything in a still shot of the flick, just a rendered clip. I dont know where I can store a clip at to show. Its a distortion.

Did you try to play the clip in a another application, i.e. quicktime player, or windows media player. Because I noticed that sometimes, even when you render something out and play the clip in AE, with RAM preview there is certain flickering that is not present when you play in another application.
    Just my 2 cents

Check the comp settings and under “Advanced” be sure your rendering plug-in is not set to “Open GL”. I found that if the renders were set to use Open GL as their render engine, still image animations always came out looking steppy and crawly. Mileage may vary, according to graphics card; but the stock graphics card I had in my G5 at the time did a very poor job of scaling and that was the culprit. That was with AE 6.5

I’ve had this problem before. Make sure you render in “Upper field” for HD/HDV or “Lower Field” in SD/DV. The reason it looks weird in RAM preview is because that is a FRAME render. It doesn’t look smooth on TV if you render in FRAME mode, unless the move is REALLY slow.

I’ve also noticed wavy effects to the ramp into and out of a move using easy ease paramaters. I’ve yet to figure a solution to this, I can tell you it is much less minimized in HD but the speed of the move also makes a difference on this “wavy” line flicker.

    Hope this helps.
