  • Problem with “write on” effect and copying masks/path from Illustrator

Posted by Robster79 on February 4, 2006 at 1:41 am

I have this very strange problem:
I’ve made a design in illustrator and imported it in AE. There are several lines in it, wich I want to animate using the “write-on” effect. So I thought I could just copy the path from Illustrator to AE and use them as “position marks” for the write-on effect. When I copy the path from Illustrator to AE, there is no problem at all. I can paste it as a mask and everything is in the right position. But when I try to paste that mask shape into position marks, the position marks are not in the right place. How can that be the path is pasted in the correct position when I use it as a mask, but completely displaced when I paste it for position marks??? I also checked the right clipboard-settings in Illustrator (AICB,…).

Aharon did a quick video tutorial showing how to import paths from Illustrator (and Photoshop)– it’s available now as a podcast in our AE Channel

Or, it will soon be available as a video tutorial on site.

pre-comp the illustrator layer to which you want to apply the write on effect, then apply the write-on effect to the pre-comp.

the problem lies in that your illustrator layer is probably not the size of your comp, so the position keyframes that you achieve through pasting in the mask end up way off, but if you pre-comp you transforme the illustrator layer to your comp size, then apply write-on effect to the pre-comp and past in the mask on the positon property. i managed to mess up and say all that tiwce i think 🙂 anyway, i had that problem time and again, and then finally figured out where i kept going wrong,… good luck /d
