Problem with the look of an reflection on an object.
Posted by Chad Demoss on July 22, 2016 at 8:40 pmIm having issues with the quality of a reflection, here are 3 screenshots
Here is the object with reflection turned on. How do I smooth this out?

Here is the mesh of the object.

Here is the object with reflection turned off.

I thought it was the displacement map that raises the surface of the object slightly but even with that turned off the reflection looks bad.

July 22, 2016 at 8:50 pmit looks like the displacement map yes (that’s the usual result unless the map is higher res and even then it depends on how close you get to the surface with a camera) and the bottom looks normal too, with that flat a surface the light would have to be at just the right angle to reflect into the camera and it’s probably not.
If you want a slightly domed surface for each tile and it needs to be smooth you might want to consider Subdivision surfaces

July 22, 2016 at 10:42 pmBy default lights don’t appear in reflections, but you’ll see a fake reflection in the specular channel. If it’s an area light and you’ve turned on the “show in reflections” option in the Details tab that could be causing the problem.
As Brian said, it’s hard to say for sure without seeing the file.

July 22, 2016 at 11:29 pmit’s the Blur Offset/Blur Scale in the Bump channel .psd – if you want to blur the bump a bit do it in the texture (it’s big enough)
