    I would add that 32bpc would be the absolute best way to render out of your 3D app and work in AE for these purposes (if you have the patience). Otherwise, use 16bpc as Dan recommends.

    One issue you will experience with DOF effects is that they are essentially glorified blurs. They can’t blur the yellow ball behind the blue ball because there is no data for the yellow ball behind the blue ball (the 3D doesn’t render non-visible faces).

    You could also extract the depth information from your RPF sequence and use it to control a Lens Blur effect. If you want to soften the edges of the objects (avoid the aliasing) you could try applying a very subtle Box Blur after you extract the depth information (do this too much and the DOF may start looking wrong). Lens Blur will take longer to render.

    Also, Lenscare is one of the better DOF effect plug-ins for AE. It still has the same shortcoming, but it seems to do a much better job of being convincing aside from that.
