Hello everyone. I’m having a problem with a simple task, to rotate a gear wheel made from illustrator. I want to animate a gear system made of several wheels that I’ve designed in Adobe Illustrator. Each wheel is in a diferent layer in the Illustrator file. Each wheel is made by grouped wheels(objects) of diferent size that are aligned in a concentric way to create a center and an edge for each wheel. So each wheel is composed by two wheels, a center wheel and an edge wheel.
When I import the layers into AE and I try to animate the rotation of one of them, the rotation behaves erraticly, the center of the wheel rotataes in a diferent direction than the edge of the wheel, even at a diferent speed. AE is rotating the center of the wheel independently of the edge of the wheel, very weird, although both wheels are in the same layer as one image. I’ve also tried to rasterize the objects in Illustrator but the result is the same. Why is this hapening? help please, I hope I’ve made myself clear, I don´t speak to much english.

Here is a link to a youtube video where you can see how rotation is behaving on this layer. This is only a layer animated with rotation. Look how the center of the wheel rotates at a a diferent spped and direction than the edge of the wheel.

i’m not even going to pretend i know how that happened, BUT i did make two boxes in Illustrator on two different layers and save it as an AI file (CS3) then import it into AE to try it out. everything worked. i imported it as a Composition and did each individual layer. i also did it the other way, importing it as footage. still worked.

    did you do something differently?

oh and another thing, from the youtube vid, it looks like the wheel is moving so fast that it ‘appears’ to be moving in the opposite direction. i think it’s just an illusion and perhaps motion blur will fix the problem?

Hey thanks for the answer. The only diferent thing I did is to group both wheels on the same layer in the Illustrator CS3 file, but I don’t see why that would’nt work. I’ve also tried to export the file as a .psd file, but the result is the same. I also think it is an optic illusion but the weird thing is that the wheel is not rotating to fast, even when I set it to rotate only one cycle in 5 seconds I get this weird rotation. Anyway, with motion blur applied appears to be moving correctly, Thanks.
