  • problem with P2 import in FCP 5.0

    hi there,

i transferred a bunch of footage i shot with the panasonic hvx200 onto a firewire drive.

i’m using fcp 5.0’s “panasonic p2” import feature to import the clips (in .MXF format) into my project.

i can import the contents of every card saved on my firewire drive, EXCEPT for one card — card 10.

card 10 has a CONTENTS folder, and this folder has the usual sub-folders, and i can see video files in the VIDEO folder.

but when i select this CONTENTS folder in FCP, it ignores me. it’s like FCP can’t “see” the files in that folder.

i’ve tried copying the files to another location and trying to import the copies. the same thing happens.

i can import the problem files using iMovie HD, but the resolution is pretty bad. the point is, i know there’s something there — it’s just a matter of figuring out how to let FCP realize that there’s something there.

has anyone run into this problem before? i’m tearing my hair out over this!

    thanks!

actually, i figured out the problem — it turns out that that transfer was corrupt, and the identical (non-corrupt) contents are in another folder.

but now i have a different problem. now i can’t import any P2 files into final cut at all! when i select the appropriate folder, final cut loads the files into the import window — i can see icons and media start/end times — but when i click on “import,” i get an error message saying that the import failed due to “probable incomplete or corrupt clips.”

can anyone help? i’m using FCP 5.0.

    thanks!

Sounds like you’re importing the wrong item. On your hard drive, set up new folders and call them Card 1, Card 2, etc. Then transfer the Contents folder AND the LASTCLIP.txt file from the first P2 card into your new Card 1 folder. Repeat for Card 2, etc.

Now go into FCP and select each of these Card folders to import – DO NOT select just the Contents folder that’s inside.

You also didn’t mention the LASTCLIP.txt file that’s on also each P2 Card. This is the file that keeps your spanned clips together (you start shooting on one card and the shot carries onto the second card). You need to be sure to copy this as well.

    hi there,

    thanks for the response!

i actually already did try doing what you recommended … i.e., choosing the folder one level above the CONTENTS folder, and not the CONTENTS folder itself. still no dice.

and yes, there is a LASTCLIP.txt file paired with each CONTENTS folder.

any idea what’s wrong here? i even tried renaming the folder containing the CONTENTS folder, on the theory that spaces or weird characters could be throwing off the import function. but i still get the same error message – “probablein complete or corrupt clips,” etc.

    thanks!

    Hey BillyHD,

I’ve just installed FCP 5 and I’m having exactly the same problems with footage I’ve saved to an external HD.

Have you had any more luck?

I’ve tried viewing the files with a demo of P2 Log HD and I can get all the metadata on them and even hear all the audio but the monitor just shows up blank on vision (even though i can see the thumbnails just like I can in FCP). The troubleshooting section in P2Log suggests this might be because my system doesn’t have the right codecs to view the files and that this is common with DVC PRO HD codecs. I still haven’t worked out how to confirm that version 5.0.1 has the correct codecs (I’m also using an Australian version of the HVX-200 which may have some bearing on the process) to import the P2 mxf files correctly.

I’ll post anything more that I find out. All other tips are gratefully (did someone say desperately?) received.

    Cheers,
    Jesse.
