At the school I work at, we’re trying out a video mixer solution for producing live keying for capture. I’ve run into a problem though.

We have a key-ed video signal coming out of a (PAL) Edirol LVS-400 mixer, into a Canopus ADVC-110, to mix in the audio, then from that box to Premiere Pro CS3 via firewire.

The problem we’re having is the captured footage has waving edges around the key-ed subject. The mixer is putting in a background, so it’s not an alpha thing as such. My thinking is it’s something to do with the interlacing, but the timeline options in PP didn’t seem to affect it.

While the best option would be a pre-PC solution, does anyone have any ideas to fix it in post?

So you’re shooting a green screen shot and doing the key in the switcher…does the footage look the same if you look at a monitor plugged directly into the switcher?

There isn’t much you can do with an already-composited bad key in post. That’s why most DO the key in post these days for anything other than live stuff (newscast weather, etc.).

Thanks for the response Tim. I’d hoped there might be a solution, but feared the worst. We switched to S-Video from the camera and that’s cleared up the biggest issues. I think we had a signal bleed problem, which is a shame because we were looking at some cheap 3CCD cameras, but they don’t have S-Video out.

Normally I’d agree with you on live keying, but this is for non-media students to turn around presentations quickly, mainly to help build confidence so I wanted a no-learning-curve solution.
