  Problem with Extended Desktop on Powerbook

  I’m having problems using a 17inch crt monitor with my Powerbook. I’d like to use it for an extended desktop but whenever I use that option in System Pref>Displays my crt goes wonky. Using the mirror function works just fine. Is this a resolution issue where the CRT can’t keep up with the LCD on the Powerbook and if so can I not somehow adjust the resolution settings separately?
