  • Problem with disk drive letters

Posted by Dave B on August 6, 2005 at 2:35 pm

I recently purchased a Maxtor external hard drive which I have been using to store all of my PP files. When I installed it, it came up as the F: drive. Its been working great and have edited several projects using it. Yesterday I plugged in my USB memory stick and it came up as the F: drive and pushed the Maxtor to the G: drive. Now the the Maxtor is now stuck as the G: drive even though memory stick is no longer plugged in. As you can imagine this plays havoc with my PP files because PP is looking for everything on the F: drive! I’ve tried detaching and reattaching the Maxtor and still no luck.

Can anyone offer some advice? Thanks in advance!
(by the way I’m using a Dell Dimension 4600)

You can permanently change the drive letter in Windows.

    Right click on My Computer.
    Select MANAGE.
Expand STORAGE, and highlight DISK MANAGEMENT.
This brings up the COMPUTER MANAGEMENT WINDOW.
On right side of this window, highlight the drive letter you want to change.
Select ACTION > ALL TASKS > CHANGE DRIVE LETTER.
    Select CHANGE
And change to what you want.

    Mitchell:

Thanks so much! This worked liked a charm and solved my problem. For some reason “change” was greyed out so I selected “add” and it changed the drive letter.

I wonder if it was mounted. Could you see files on that drive before you fixed it?

Yes. Files were showing on the G drive.

Next time you plug in the memory stick the problem will come back. When the memory stick is in, cnange its drive letter to something high, say, M, then it will not try to steal F again.
