I’m having trouble getting a clean cross dissolve in FCP 6.02. I’m working with a dance multiclip that has shots which contain a lot of black– black background, black costumes but the dancers are backlit and the set is lit and levels are all good. When rendering dissolves, the fade itself never goes completely black so that the dissolve sort of pops on and off. Its as if the black level was hiked up a bit. However, when I’m scrolling frame by frame in the timeline before rendering it looks fine. Same with additive dissolves. What gives, cause I need to be able to dissolve?

    Thanks again guys

Persistence of vision can often cause bright sources against a very dark background to appear to linger through a transition in ways that you won’t notice when transitioning between shots that have overall flat lighting.

This may be a case when keyframing the opacity of the two shots on separate tracks is the only way to get the type of control you need.

I think I tried that. Placed two clips on separate tracks, dragged them out for overlap and then placed nodes and dragged down the opacity. Same results. One other observation: when RT is in “dynamic” the transition looks fine, but when rendered at high quality the problem occurs.

What codec is the Seq using and
What extra hardware are you running (aja, BlackMagic etc.)
