  • Problem with “because the timecode extents doesn’t match” with 5D footage

Posted by Bryan Fowler on January 4, 2012 at 8:09 pm

    Hi fellas.

I’m having issues bringing in footage to Resolve Lite 8.2 from FCP 7

I export the XML from FCP, take it to Resolve, Import the XML.
    – Single video track

It imports 47 of the 200ish clips. Most of the others give an error with “because the timecode extents doesn’t match”

    The history of these files.

I used 5DtoRGB to convert them to Prores 4444 (yeah…I know…a bit overkill, but it was for fun)
Then did the edit in FCP. Audio is separate.

I know I’m leaving out steps, but what can I tell you to help me work out why it’s doing this?

    ************

I had a thought while typing this. It seems that the missing clips have no REEL. not sure how that happened. I’ll add reels in FCP and see if that helps. =\

but my question still stands. (and if that’s the problem maybe this will help others)

    Thanks
    Bryan

In 99% of these cases the problem is in front of the screen 🙂

So first you should check and see if you have those reels, then continue with the TC if there is any now.
Also you might want to try it via EDL and see what happens.
I am quite certain its a setting thing.

Hah! I hear you. Wait… in front of my screen meaning my wallet sitting on the desk? =)

So, I added a random reel to the clip in FCP. Re-exported the XML and same thing. BUT the clips in Resolve now had reels. (even though they are useless to me right now)

So then I did an EDL and everything is fine. Well, there are a few conflicts, but that should be easy to work out.

I’m still learning this, but liking it more and more. It almost feels like it did when I went to Apple Color from the 3-way color corrector….Almost.

I’d still like to know what the XML issue is, and/or how to properly troubleshoot it. But for now I can grade this short and be done with it.

    Thanks Sascha

When you import the XML, do you choose to “ignore reels”?

You may also be able to make use of manual reel number manipulation:

    In Browse:

    Set Reel Number
Just as we selected on the configuration page, project tab, conform timeline section, you can select or
change the way Resolve defines the clip reel number in the media pool. There is one additional option
here, to have a user defined reel number, which is quite helpful when the automatic conforming of clips
is not possible or a reel name in the file is incorrect.

    Hi JP.

I don’t see “ignore reels” but I’ll keep looking for it.

And I’ll try the Set Reel Number too, and see if that helps. I doubt it will mess things up going back to FCP. …here’s hoping.

Sorry, I was thinking of “ignore file extensions”….

but Resolve does live and die by reel number and timecode, as has been stated previously on this forum.
