  • Problem with Architect NTSC Video Stream

Posted by Gary Abraham on November 29, 2011 at 2:33 pm

    Hi
I have Vegas 10 and my project Properties are
    HDV 1080-60i (1440 x 1080 , 29.970 fps)
I need Standard def 4×3 on a DVD.
When I render as Main Cencept Mpeg 2
DVD Architect NTSC Video Stream and create the DVD,
the output on a wide screen TV is a full 16×9 reduced size box on the screen.
Not letterboxed top and bottom, all 4 sides.
When I go to Event Pan/Crop and preset 4:3 Standard TV Aspect Ratio
and then make the DVD in Architect the same way, I get exactly what I want on the TV, Full screen top to bottom and Cropped on the left and right.
The problem is that output looks terrible with any motion on the screen. The movement of a hand is totally pixelized.
    Can someone help me this?
    Regards,
    Gary Abraham

[Gary Abraham] “When I render as Main Cencept Mpeg 2 DVD Architect NTSC Video Stream and create the DVD, the output on a wide screen TV is a full 16×9 reduced size box on the screen. Not letterboxed top and bottom, all 4 sides.”

That’s because you took a 16:9 frame, and letterboxed it into a 4:3 MPEG2 stream, and then pillarboxed it by displaying the 4:3 stream on a 16:9 device. Once you letterbox 16:9 to 4:3 you don’t have 16:9 anymore. All you have is 4:3 so there is no way to get the 16:9 back again on the 16:9 device (which is why you are seeing black on all 4 sides).

That’s the correct way to do 4:3.

Could you be seeing interlace artifacts? What are your project properties? What is your Deinterlace Method set to?

    Hi John,
    I probably have the wrong settings. They are;
    Template – HDV 1080-60i (1440×1080, 29.970)
    Field order – Upper first
    Pixel format – 8 bit
    Full resolution – Good
    Motion Blur – Gaussion
    Deinterlace – None
box checked – Adjust source media to better match project or render settings
    Thanks in advance
    Gary

    [Gary Abraham] “Deinterlace – None”

That’s your problem. You are working with interlaced video but you didn’t tell Vegas how to deinterlace it. If you are working with interlaced video you should never set the Deinterlace to None.

You should set your Deinterlace Method back to Blend Fields and all should be well.

    Thank you John,
Obviously, I have some gaps in my understanding of video.
With your help and others, I love working with Vegas.
