  • Problem with adding .mp4 to FCP 7

    Hey!

I’m trying to add an .mp4 file into Final Cut Pro 7 because I want to cut out a scene from a movie for a school assignment. But every time I try to add the file to the viewer I get an error “General error”, so I press OK and then sometimes another error comes up “Error: Out of Memory”, press OK again and nothing happens.

If I put the movie straight to the timeline the same happens, but the movie will end up on the timeline and there is sound but no picture. Instead there is this in the canvas:

This is the details on the .mp4 file:

    Thanks!

    Please search forum.

FCP does not like to work w/ mp4 files.
convert it to a mov first, then import to edit.

Yeah, that’s what I thought. But after converting it to a .mov file the whole movie is just random colours and choppy. It’s impossible to see what happens.

I converted to Apple ProRes 422, and it still won’t work.

What did you use to convert them?
    What settings did you choose?

In mpegstreamclip the nearest size would be 720×360

Your clips are an odd size = 720×384

SD NTSC is 720X480 or 720×486

Can you convert them to .mov and maintain size?
Do you have a compression program other then compressor?

    After Effects?

I would put the clips into (after converted) 720×480 sequence having extreme letterbox look. AE would make it easy for you.

I used Mpegstreamclip to convert to .mov, the same settings as you have on the picture. Except I chose to do nothing with the scale and I hooked off interlaced.
The size is not an issue.

    I got After Effects yes.
But after I have converted it to the .mov file it’s impossible to see anything at all on the movie. It doesn’t work in the players nor After Effects.

If you converted it to ProRes, you should be able to view it just fine. Can your mac play and view the original mp4 file?

    Can AE play that file?

Create a 720×480 Anamorphic Timeline in AE, drop this clip in it.
    Render out a dv50 mov

I put the original mp4 file in AE and rendered out as a DV50 movie and it works, big file size but working at least!

Is it possible that your source file has any problem? You know all the settings u did is ok, and Prores is the native format for FCP. so it’s strange. How about trying other MP4 file?
or have you tried other software to do conversion to Apple ProRes 422?
