Problem with a supposed “h264” codec
I was not sure where to psot this, but I guess this should work…
My boss has this little Memorex “7 in 1” thing (MCC228RSBLK). It shoots HD video, which is why he bought it.
He spent a weekend recording some video of his kids, and he wants me to edit it together with FCP.
No problem, right? Wrong.
I grabbed all the video files, and when opened in QT Pro, they are black. I hit Command+I to see the info, and it tells me it is “H264” format, which Quicktime ought to be able to handle.
VLC plays the video fine, but with no sound.
When I try exporting out of Quicktime to .MOV, it gives me an all white screen!
When I bring it into FCP, it displays nothing at all.
I tried looking it up on the internet, and it is as if this product does not exist…
Any ideas?

What’s the file extension?
Did he removed the source from the folder (damaging or deleting the metadata needed)?
I’ve seen the odd codec anomaly before with H.264 as well.Recently I ran into a situation where I got a corrupted folder from a camera that records AVCHD. This utility (runs slow in free mode) was able to rescue the files and convert them straight to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) so we could edit in Final Cut Pro.

In response- I completely meant to specify in my original thread, but it has a .avi extension.
I doubt they are damaged, because I pulled them straight off the camera.
I will give that program a shot, and thanks again!

PERIAN.
I did not have perian installed. I completely forgot I was working on my work computer, which did not have the Perian component installed.

For us media geeks that’s practically like not have Acrobat Reader installed for the rest of the world. -
I am not claiming to be on anywhere near the same level as you guys, but I really am embarrassed, and should have caught it immediately.

Perian can be a real trouble maker sometimes though. I’m glad the devs realized it and allowed one to uninstall in its System Pref Pane. Of course some of use geeks to forget to reactivate so I’ve learned to check that whenever I bump into a file I can’t play in Quicktime but think I should.
