Problem with 2-Drive RAID 1 enclosure
I have this enclosure that I bought about a year and a half ago (my first experience with using a RAID setup)-
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MEPQ946QL2/ (Although my model is the Oxford 936 chipset- no jumpers on the bridge board)
I put in my own matching 1 TB drives. I used the OWC Oxsemi Configurator app to set up the enclosure for RAID 1.It stopped working a few months back (just outside of warranty). I called OWC- Mac Sales, but there wasn’t much they could do except to recommend to take the drives out and see if they worked individually. They did, and I’ve been using one for FCP via eSata/ExpressCard in my MBP 17″ i7 and the other as it’s backup since then.
I got the idea yesterday to see if I could get this working again as I suspected it originally stopped working because of a loose connection as both drives were fine. I forgot that this enclosure was only set up for RAID 1 and not JBOD so I hosed a couple of drives in my experimenting (but got them back with Carbon Copy Cloner later that day).
—According to a post elsewhere, it appears the “The RAID Mirror is rebuilt from the Primary Drive (plugged into the circuit board). So if the Primary drive fails you will need to swap them over before inserting the new drive. The rebuild will occur without being connected to the computer as long as the power is turned on to the enclosure.”
Question:
So now that I have the drives in good shape again (erased via Disk Utility, re-built as Mac OS Extended (NOT Journaled)…
1. How should I go about trying to put it back together?
I’ve got a current “FCP Capture” drive ready to go to be put in the primary slot.
2. Should I put it in and place a blank formatted drive in the slot above? Or, I could re-name the secondary disc also to “FCP Capture” and pre-Carbon Copy Clone if that would help.3. Should I run the OWC Oxsemi Configurator app with both drives in or before adding the drives?
I will call OWC this week, but I may have gotten steered in the wrong direction last time, so I thought I’d ask here as well.
Thanks,
Dave
