  Problem Warping Text into Path

  Hi everyone,

  I’m trying to warp text into a path using the Envelope Distort > Make with Top Object option, but for some reason I’m having a hard time.

  The top object is the letter C, which I’ve typed, converted to outlines, ungrouped and released the compound path to make it a single path.
  When I select the envelope distort option, the text morphs in a really strange way that doesn’t conform to the path outlines at all (see photo below).
  I’ve tried tracing the C with the pen tool myself and distorting the text then, but it ended up looking the same.

  

  I’d appreciate anyone’s advice!
