Problem playing back h264 in FCP using aja kona
Hi
When using a kona card on my mac pro I can preview every type of codec I play back within final cut, apart from h264 files!
ProRes is totally fine during play back and plays back nicely on the preview monitor. But when playing back h264 footage (shot on a 5d) the monitor hangs on the first frame even though playback continues on the timeline!
Quite frustrating! Any ideas so I don’t have to re render all my files as prores each time I use them?

Prerender your files to ProRes. There’s a couple of ways to do it, search the FCP forum for answers. I recommend logging and transferring with the Canon log and transfer plug-in.
The Kona supports any codec that FCP handles in rt. The h264 codec is not one of them unfortunately.

Convert those 5D files. Do not work with H.264 natively…processor intensive, won’t work with the hardware for viewing out (oddly, it does work with the Avid hardware for viewing).
There’s a specific workflow for tapeless….and this includes Canon DSLR. I just did a tutorial on this.

Canon provides a free plug in for this for FCP log and transfer.
In addition Magic Bullet offers Grinder for 49 bucks for the Canon line to go into FCP
and mpeg streamclip also works well, and this is also free.“Why can’t things just work” you whine ? Shut up, and go back to work.
