Problem importing MP4s – system not on internet
Preamble: I’m not a Vegas user (Premiere Pro) but am a 29-year veteran editor.
I recently configured a new Windows editing system for use inside a state prison. The guys in the Chapel shoot and edit worship services, music videos, etc., and their old system was crapping out. They know Vegas so I installed the latest version, along with some other stuff they needed. The system is not and cannot be connected to the internet.
When I went back a few weeks later to check in, they said Vegas won’t import MP4s out of their camera, that there’s some error message that comes up (sorry I didn’t write it down) stating the system couldn’t work with them because it’s not connected to the internet. So they’re converting EVERYTHING to WMV and working with those files. Not optimal.
Is this normal? Any suggestions on how this can be fixed? Thanks in advance….

HI John,
As you know it is pretty tough trying to run down an error code that you can not show us. So, hopefully you can get them to load that mp4 again, and write down the error code along with any additional information that Vegas may offer when that code pops up.
I’ve never seen it in any version of Vegas for importing an mp4, although Vegas may not have the codec required by that file type. In that event it wants to connect with Magix to authorize the codec, which may be on the system, but requires a one-time connection to Magix to license the codec.
I think what would be ideal is if you can get the computer back outside, along with their source media, put a temp internet connection and see if Magix will do it’s magic to the error could by connecting home. If this works, remove the temp internet connection and return to user, it will not need to connect again in the future.

Update: I was able to get the system back from the prison. When I opened Vegas and imported an MP4, I got a message that said something like, “Okay, the AAC codec is installed.” So apparently, it needs the internet to do that housekeeping before it can work with the files.

Good to hear John you have it worked out. Codec authorization is a one time thing, so unless you have to re-install the program (with a clean uninstall) that should be good forever.
