December 8, 2016 at 4:08 pmI also came across this issue today and the only way I was able to fix it is by changing how I named my files. When I have them named Scene 1, Scene 2, Scene 3 and so forth they come in as a footage sequence no matter what I do. But when I name them things such as Gas Pump Scene and Cloud City Scene they come in as ai layers. I don’t know if this is adobe testing a new thing without telling us or what. Either way I really don’t know if that was what fixed it. But it seems to work.

December 8, 2016 at 4:22 pmHey Walter,
I hadn’t noticed that option button, that’s the fix! ☺
The options button on the import window opens this dialogue ..
My files imported correctly using the ‘options button’ and once I unchecked ‘import as sequence’ .. it now defaults to that.
Thanks for your input all, much appreciated 🙂

December 8, 2016 at 5:58 pmYay! That little button is where I think most of us were thinking the issue was. Glad you found it!

January 10, 2017 at 12:23 pmIts a simple fix, it also stumped me for a while.
When promted to select file to import into AE, click the options button on bottom left of finder and uncheck sequence.
