  • PROBLEM IMPORTING DVCPRO HD SEQUENCE INTO COLOR…

Posted by Robert Jackson on February 27, 2008 at 6:02 pm

    Dear Gurus:

Was able to import my Avid edited dvcpro hd 720pn footage into FCP with no problems. However, once I send the sequence into Color (1.0.2), the footage is imported but cannot be displayed, and a red “x” is displayed on the file. It does not play on the viewer and relinking the media does nothing…we’re desperately trying to start the color correction of this feature asap for inclusion in festivals, so any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated!

I don’t think the Avid DVCPro HD codec is the same as Apple’s. It might work in FCP, but I’ve never tried to bring anything originated in Avid into Color.

    Dear Walter:

Thank you for taking the time to answer our call. I see. Seems strange that color wouldn’t support footage that plays correctly in FCP..

Would I then have to export the footage from FCP first into the same format (dvcpro hd 720 pn) to then reimport it so that I can then send it to Color? It would be bothersome (82 minute feature film) but we’re really desperate here…

[walter biscardi] “I don’t think the Avid DVCPro HD codec is the same as Apple’s. It might work in FCP, but I’ve never tried to bring anything originated in Avid into Color.”

It was developed by Avid, since the standard DVCPRO HD codec was not made available for PC’s by Apple/Panasonic. It’s the same on a technical level, but it has a different signature/wrapper and is probably not supported in Color. Since you got it to work in FCP, perhaps you can use Media Manager in FCP to transcode to the standard/non-Avid DVCPRO-HD codec.

Color only supports a few formats at this time. FCP is capable of playing far more formats than Color can support.

I guess I answered my own question there. The workaround was to export the sequence as an mov file using the same settings as the file, then reimporting it into FCP as new project, and then when I sent it to Color it worked just fine. Thank you everyone for your kind help!
