I’ve recently installed the Adobe CS3 suite and would like to play w/ Premiere Pro v.3.0.0. I’ve created a project (DV/NTSC) and am trying to import some footage from MiniDV to play around with.
When I go to capture and the capture window opens, I don’t see my video…just black. I’ve tried using various cameras (HVX200, XL-1, GL-1) hooked up via firewire (changed the device control settings too) and have had no luck w/ any of them. The capture window controls the cameras as decks and allows me to play, FF, rewind, etc. but when I go to capture (hit the red button) and then stop it says no frames were recorded.
The only way I’ve seen video in my preview window during capture was to hook up my camera (analog) via a Canopus digital converter box. The problem there is that then the transport control buttons (most importantly the record button) were grayed out and I couldn’t access them.
I tried uninstalling the software and reinstalling it and still have the same problems.
I also run Media100 Producer on the same machine and it captures and edits fine. I just want to have the option to use either editing app.
Oddly, this wasn’t an issue the first day I installed it. I was able to capture analog video just fine and I still have a project saved w/ that footage in it. Problem appeared after a couples days of installing it. I mention that because I also have another problem in that when sending the signal from a test project out to a firewire camera as a deck, no audio seemed to be sent via the firewire cable…just video. I know the cable is fine because in doing the same thing out of Media100 it’s fine. ?? Please offer some advice because I posted this problem about a month ago and got no responses.

I’d turn to Sherlock Holmes and start to do some sleuthing.
You’ve got 5 options, camera, cable, firewire device, other software running or CS3.
Here are some of the tests I’d run.

    1. Turn off everything else which is running in the background – use Autoruns.

    2. Can you import the video via Firewire to Windows Movie Maker or some other simple video product?

    3. Change cables.

    4. Change cameras. Find a friend with Firewire camera and see if you can capture with it.

    5. You could even install CS3 on a laptop and see if you can capture.

You need to do a lot of detective work to figure out which component is the culprit.

    Hi Terry!
Thanks for taking to time to reply.

    1. Is this a Mac or PC thing? I’m running on Macs.
Mac Pro desktop: Mac OS 10.4.11, 2 x 2GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 2 GB RAM, running Premiere Pro CS3 v.3.2.0
MacBook Pro laptop: Mac OS 10.4.11, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, running Premiere Pro CS3 v.3.2.0

Can you import the video via Firewire to Windows Movie Maker or some other simple video product?
    2. I’ve got no problems importing and outputting analog video from Media100 Producer which is loaded on both of my Macs via firewire or my Canopus ADVC110 box.

    Change cables.
    3. I don’t see a need to do this because they work w/ other apps. I have used 2 different firewire cables though.

Change cameras. Find a friend with Firewire camera and see if you can capture with it.
    4. The Panny HVX200 isn’t mine. It’s borrowed. Mine are a Canon XL-1, GL-1 and a Panny DVCPRO camcorder (analog.)

You could even install CS3 on a laptop and see if you can capture.
    5. Done. PPCS3 is loaded on a MacBook Pro as well as my Mac Pro desktop. Same problems on each system. Not sure if it’s something I’m doing wrong prior to capturing. I do select the appropriate device settings. It has told me the capture setting weren’t set but I’m not sure what that means.
My capture format is Quicktime, Capture Locations as same as project and the device control options get changed based on what deck/camera I’m trying to capture from.
