Problem compressing to Vimeo
I’m a novice at compression and web streaming and humbly request your help. I have a detailed description of my problem in the Software forum but I think I can explain my problem in a more efficient manner over here: is it possible to compress a 6 minute long, 1080p/24fps, 1.3gb mp4 file to under 500mb for Vimeo without the end product looking like trash? I’m trying to compress in the H.264 format.
I’ve tried the presets in Adobe Premiere, including Vimeo HD and others, but they super-compress my file to 200mb and the quality looks terrible. I attempted to use Streamclip to no avail, as it repeatedly spat out the error “can’t prepare movie.” Finally, I manually adjusted the bit rate to make my file just under 500mb, but the end product on Vimeo is disgustingly jittery. My solutions are simply not working. Is there something I’m doing wrong or anything else I can do?

What other encoding software do you have available? The key is that you have a 6 minute video and a 500MB max size for the encode. From this, we know your max bit rate is roughly 11,000Kbps (11Mbit/s) (6 minutes is 360 seconds and 500MB is 4,09600Kbit)
This is plenty of bandwidth for a clean encode.

After weeks of troubleshooting, I came to the conclusion you just wrote. Manually adjusting the bit rate to get my file just under 500mb was the ultimate solution. After uploading my video to Vimeo multiple times, it played back in a jittery and choppy manner and I was so frustrated because I knew I was doing everything right.
I soon realized I was viewing through Vimeo’s Flash player. Despite my computer having plenty of power to playback HD in Flash, something still wasn’t right. Then, stupid me, realized I could switch playback to HTML5. Bingo. My video played back smoothly with very good quality. All I had to do this whole time was click “switch to HTML5 player.” Duh. But I have learned a lot from posting in these forums so I thank you guys for that.

This is a very common problem and you can certainly see why there’s advantages to sites supporting HTML5 as well. Generally if someone has playback issues with Vimeo Flash, they should switched to HTML5. Other COW posters have had this issue as well. BTW YouTube can also switch to HTML5 but it’s a bit harder to find. The issue is Flash acceleration on some computers. It’s GPU related. Some GPUs don’t handle acceleration of Flash but will handle it if it’s H.264 directly (as HTML allows for).
