  • PROBLEM: Color Changes While Playing

Posted by Sean Perry on December 21, 2010 at 8:48 pm

    Hey All,

My problem is very annoying. When the playhead is still, the color of my footage is correct (the way I adjusted it in After Effects), however when press Play, the color of the footage darkens, very noticeably. This has just started happening and I just started using Magic Bullet for Color Correction. But the problem seems to be from FCP.

    Thanks for the help,

    Sean

What Easy Setup are you using?
    What codec is your footage?
    What version of FCP?
    What version of the plugin?

How are you monitoring your footage? You cannot judge color off is the computer screen you need a external calibrated video monitor.

Oh. I see. I just started using an external monitor. Should I just edit from that instead?

I’ve often wondered the same. Sure an external calibrated monitor is the correct / most reliable way to color correct / judge your work, but surely the brightness shouldn’t change between still and motion?

External computer monitor or external video monitor?
    There is a difference.

What kind of monitor and how is it connected.

Pretty sure just a video monitor. It’s simply a Vizio TV connected via VGA.

Nope that’s just a TV hooked up like a computer monitor. Video monitors are connected via capture cards or other specially designed cards or connections.

So, is the connected TV screwing up my playback?

I have the same issue sometimes – and sometimes I don’t. I work watching (quality control) professional mainstream movies from big studios, with perfect color calibration, always with Prores 422 HQ. I’m pretty sure it has nothing to do with external monitors.

Check Display setting in your System Preferences pane?
If the Display Profile was set to any other than your mac setting, try to set it back to your mac’s default.

    For instance:
System Preferences > Display > Color > Display Profile > iMac.

It worked for me. Hope this helps.
