  • Problem capturing video using firewire.

    Hi, I’ve been making a movie with my two sons. Last Sunday we did some green screen scenes and I hooked up my Sony camcorder to the firewire cable and nothing happened. Usually a window comes up asking what program to use for the capture. Went into Premiere and it said video capture can’t access device. Tried it with two other programs and same thing occurred. Went to device manager and checked the 1394 devices and it said all was working properly. I have and external DVD writer/reader and everything worked well through the 1394 cable. Thought it might be the camera and tried it with another one with the same result. It seems to me that the problem is something wrong with the video capture driver. I don’t remember ever loading a video capture driver so I don’t know how to check it. Trying to research this it seems that the video capture driver is part of XP. But I’m not sure.

    What can I do to check and/or replace the capture driver. I’ve been messing with this for 3 days nad can’t figure out what to do.

    Thanks for any help,

    Bill

    Although, it really should not make a difference, but download drivers for your 1394 card and see if that helps. Also, did you install any new software recently or any MS updates?

    The 1394 card seems to be working fine. Also I have not installed any new software. What I’m not grasping is what the whole video capture equation consists of. When you buy a 1394 card there isn’t any software included. Which means the 1394 card functions as a conduit to allow video capture. What I think is screwed up is the item (Video capture driver?) that allows the video to be captured to your editing program. So my questions are;
    1. Is there a video capture driver?,
    2. Is the driver part of Premiere, Windows, or what.
    3. What can I do to correct it?.

    Thanks for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it.

    Windows supports OHCI firewire protocol…no drivers needed. Try turning off all other firewire devices.
    A bad cable can cause the problem… I have 2 cams that have bad firewire ports.

    Im having the same problem & understand your frustration. Its seems odd that it should be so tricky to complete the first-step with the program.
