I’m having trouble capturing in FCP 5.1
    Using a Powerbook G4, system 10.4.6.
Capture window opens fine, and I can control the deck, but cannot see any picture or capture anything.
I can see the audio meters responding to the audio on the tape/deck.
If I try to capture, it tells me no device is selected.
This happens whatever deck I have plugged into the laptop.
I have tried replacing the firewire cable.
I can’t try another firewire port as the laptop only has 1 port.

This problem is only happening on this particular laptop, capturing on our G5 is fine. It seems to me like a firewire problem on the system, but I’m unsure how to fix it.

    Anyone have any ideas?

What easy setup are you using?

Sounds like you have the wrong format selected. You don’t have nay other fw devices daisy chained/attached do you?

Using easy set up for DV PAL, did also try other easy set ups too…no results from any of them.
No other devices daisy chained – unplugging all other firwire devices was the first thing we tried.

    OK. What deck?

Are you sure you have the video set to all frames and have you refreshed external devices?

Have been trying both a DV camera and also a Sony J-30SDI DigiBeta deck – no problem with the deck, they just took it back and tested it.
Have refreshed A/V devices, but when I try to set external video to it won’t allow me to. Its stuck on .

    [Wonderdog] “Its stuck on .”

Meaning it’s on or it’s off?

Hey Wonderdog, take a look at your previous post on the cow (not in your email) and see how part of it is omitted?

    https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/8/952164

If you use the “<" and ">” to format text, it will omit it in Creative Cow due to html formatting. Take a look at the little note above every message pane.

In the response email I got, the formatting showed up, though, so now I know what you said. You said it’s stuck to off.

So, what you need to do is refresh AV devices. If that doesn’t work. Quit FCP. Power cycle your dv deck. Then open FCP and choose the dv PAL easy setup again.

Thanks for the note about formating Jeremy.

Have tried the above, but still no luck. When I open FCP it gives me a message that it is ‘unable to find external devices – Apple Firewire PAL’

I’m looking into upgrading QuickTime, one of the trouble shooting sites suggests that may be the problem – have downloaded version 7.2, but as I’m running system 10.4.6, I can’t install the new QT!

I’d suggest not doing that. Did you recently update the OSX.4? Has the firewire connection ever worked?

Yes I recently upgraded to OX 10.4.6.

I haven’t used the firewire to capture video for quite a while, but it always worked fine before.
