  • Problem capturing from Sony Handycam in Final Cut Pro

    Hi,

I have had a strange issue when attempting to capture footage from my Sony DV handycam over an i.LINK (firewire) connection. I open log and capture and log the clips I want to capture then when I try to “batch capture”, it starts capturing for about 1 or 2 seconds then stops and comes up with the error message: “Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has ben aborted and your clip has been saved.” The same happens when I “capture now”.

The thing is that I don’t think it is a problem with the tape because I can capture it fine using iMovie. Plus I have encountered this problem before using different tapes recorded on different (and better) cameras such as a Sony PD170.

I think it may be a glitch in Final Cut but I couldn’t find anything about in when I tried to search for a solution to my problem. Any ideas why this would happen? Is there a way to solve this problem so I can capture using Final Cut Pro?

Macbook Pro 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Final Cut Pro 6.0.5
    Logic Pro 8
    Photoshop CS1

    Hi Ed,
You are not capturing to an USB HD, don’t you?
FC is more demanding than iMovie for capturing.
Try unchecking “Abort capture on dropped frames” and set “On Time Code breaks: Warn after capture”.
    Cheers,

    Hi Rafael, Ed,

I have the same problem, I’m trying to log and capture and after 3 secs it stops and gives the message:

“capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with your tape. Capture hase been aboted and your clip has been saved.”

I don’t understand what is wrong, I never had this problem before. I’m using a Mac OS X 10.5.4, FCP 6.0. I’m capturing with USB to an external hard disk.

I tried Rafaels option, but it doesn’t help. Anyone any idea how to solve this?

    cheers Sonja

I have the same problem. Did you ever get this solved? We tried everything, but nothing helps. We use a Sony camera.

Yes, the heads of the camera were dirty by recording the video. The data on the tape was not complete. We could never use the tape.. After cleaning the heads the problem was solved.

Corrupted Preference, Cache, and FCP PLIST files located in the Mac Go(option key): Library: Preferences folder must be deleted to provide smooth captures without aborts.
